KHIPU ORIGIN
Khipu, Qhipu or the “talking knots”, is a system of written language adopted by the Inca empire before the Spanish invasions, for the processing and transmission of statistical and narrative information.
On one horizontal string, professionals Khipucamayuqs (knotters) - who in case of errors paid with their lives- hang numerous other strings made of llama or alpaca hair that vary in number, size, length, distance, knots, twine technology, and color, conveying thus meaning. social status, personal or other cases handling issues, etc.
Next ''chaskis'' (Inka messengers) navigated the steep slopes of the Andes on foot, carrying one of the world’s most durable envelopes: a khipu draped over each shoulder. Linked to textile art, it is not only a way of binding strings but a tangible interface encrypted in knots and cords, just as the ''khipu'' itemsare not only a way of laying out beads but a way of narrating a story too.
